Latest Sightings

Despite the stormy weather over the weekend, we have had pleasant variety of birds on the reserve. On Saturday on the Mere, 2 Peregrines were seen flying over on the hunt as they caused a flurry of birds to rise up in a panic. Other birds sighted on the mere over the weekend include 240 Black-tailed Godwits, 8 Oystercatchers, and 14 Mediterranean Gulls.

Over at Harrier Hide, 3 Great-crested Grebe, 13 Pochard, 1 Cetti's Warbler, and 2 Reed Bunting were all seen. Around the Reedbed walk, the Bittern can still occasionally be heard booming. Meanwhile, from United Utilities Hide, 120 Pink-footed Geese were seen feeding, along with 1 Curlew and 5 Wigeon. On Woodend Marsh, 4 Redshank, 35 Avocets, and 250 Black-headed Gulls were all showing well.

On the path leading to Ron Barker Hide, 2 Blackcap and 1 Greenfinch were seen. From Ron Barker Hide, 3 Whooper Swans can still be sighted- it is likely that they will stay around through the summer. The Glossy Ibis continues to be seen regularly among the Cattle Egrets and 5 Swallows
