The mere continues to be busy with, 9 Mediterranean gulls, 57 Black- Tailed Godwits, 820 Black-Headed Gulls, 24 Avocets, Oystercatchers and a Common Sandpiper being seen over the weekend. Today the first Wheatear (male) of the year was seen at the back of the mere, best seen from Discovery hide and at the side of United Utilities. The latter hide also gives a great view of Woodend Marsh, where 3 Redshank were reported on Friday. Shoveler, Wigeon, Teal and Ruff can are also frequently sighted on Woodend Marsh. 

Over on the reedbed the Bittern continues to be heard booming, with the latest report coming on Saturday. Great Crested Grebes (2), Pochard (76) and Water Rail (2) were also sighted on the reedbed on the same day.

Finally, a ring-tailed Hen Harrier and a Barn owl were seen flying over the reserve on Friday. Best viewed from the Ron Barker hide.
