It’s been an interesting few days for the wildlife at Martin Mere – first of all, a lot of our Black-headed Gull chicks have fledged and can now be seen flying over the Mere. Swallows can often be seen flying over the water catching flies, and on Tuesday, 9 Black-tailed Godwit were present on the back of the Mere.

Down on Woodend Marsh, up to four Green Sandpiper have been present, as well as eight Cattle Egret – our English Longhorn cattle are now on the Marsh, so this can be a reliable site. Seven Little Ringed Plover have also been seen from the Tomlinson hide.

At the Ron Barker hide, three Great Egret have been seen, along with hunting Marsh Harrier. Tufted Duck are often seen in the sluice, and the resident Whooper Swans can be seen on Sunley’s Marsh or the adjacent ditch. The Green Sandpipers have also been seen here.

Mediterranean Gulls have been ranging around the site lately – look out for their newly-fledged young on the wing. Great Crested Grebe chicks have been down in the Reedbed at Harrier Hide, and these can often be seen sitting on their parents’ backs.
