Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Finally some hot weather has arrived and it is really bringing out the wildlife. This week we have begun to see our first avocet chicks out on The Mere and Woodend Marsh. Two Mediterranean Gulls have been hanging around on the mere within the Black Headed Gull colony. There has also been a cuckoo regularly calling around Ron Barker and the canoe safari within the grounds. Dragonflies are beginning to appear across the reserve with large numbers of Banded demoiselles flying in the ditch that runs from United Utilities to Ron Barker, best seen on the bridge before the track to Ron Barker. We have also had Azure, Common blue, Large red and Blue tailed damselflies across the site. The only Dragonfly to be spotted so far are Four-spotted chasers.
