Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Recent Sightings

Wildfowl numbers increasing on the Mere with 70 Shoveler, 500 Teal (c1000 on site), 45 Pintail, 24 Tufted Duck, 8 Pochard and 500 Mallard. Lots of Pink-footed Geese in and out today with a few thousand in Plover Field on and off throughout the day. At least 12 - 15 Whooper Swan on the Mere mainly feeding on the Potatoes out from Hale Hide.

The Willow Tit is still being reported visiting the feeders at Janet Kear Hide, also a Nuthatch in recent days.

Barn Owl has been showing again from Ron Barker also a Green Sandpiper. A group of 15 Black-tailed Godwit were on the Mere. Ruff and plenty of Lapwing feeding in the outer fields.

Yesterday a group of 7 Avocet were out on Woodend Marsh but no sign today.
