Brand new bug hunting and wet meadow experience opens at WWT Martin Mere

WWT Martin Mere is excited to announce the opening of its new interactive outdoor experience, a new wet meadow habitat with self-guided bug hunting, as of Thursday 7 August 2025.
This innovative nature zone invites visitors to choose their own adventure along the accessible wet meadow. One route allows visitors to walk through shallow channels of up to 6cm of water. Alternatively, the green route takes visitors along a drier pathway through wildflower meadows.
In the parallel bug hunt zone, families and nature lovers are encouraged to explore the different microhabitats. Gently lift logs, sift through leaf litter, and peer into the water of a newly-installed raised pond.
Nick Brooks, Centre Manager at WWT Martin Mere, said: “This new development is designed to celebrate wetlands and encourage splashing and exploration in a unique and interactive way. We hope our visitors love it and we’re excited to see what wonderful wildlife they find.”
The project builds upon recent improvements, including the centre’s new Paddle and Play wet play area, marking WWT Martin Mere's ongoing investment in accessible, family‑friendly nature experiences.
Plans are also underway to install some of the longest stepping stones in the North West, leading from the end of the new sunken walkway across the lake.
The new wet meadow and bug hunting experience was made possible thanks to funding by the Lancashire Environmental Fund.
It is included as part of the admission price for WWT Martin Mere, with WWT members entering free. Those who are not members can prebook online and save 10% on admission.
