Greater flamingo chicks hatch at Martin Mere!

WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre, based in West Lancashire, has welcomed fluffy flamingo chicks into its Living Collection.

The greater flamingo chicks hatched between late April and early May, and have already ventured off their nest, which they do within around five to seven days of hatching.

The chicks remain with the existing flock and are being well looked after by the adults and the team. You will often see the flamingo chicks bundled together as they form a ‘creche’ which is essentially a flamingo day care whilst they are looked after by a few adult "babysitters". But, they will return to their parents to feed!

The chicks hatch with a fluffy grey down, which will start to turn their iconic pink when they reach about two years in age.

If you want to see the chicks in person, you can see them around their nesting area at the Greater flamingo habitat. It’s one of the first habitats you will come across as you leave our shop to walk around the Living Collection!
