Inclusive SEND Family Day Announced at WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre

Families of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are invited to enjoy a day of nature, exploration and inclusive activities at WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre on 13 June 2026.

The SEND Family Day, which is the first of its kind at Martin Mere, offers a welcoming and supportive environment where families can explore the wetlands at their own pace while taking part in a range of engaging, nature-based experiences tailored to different needs.

A young girl is looking inside her tray which is filled with water and pond creatures. Next to her is a member of staff at WWT.

Visitors can enjoy activities such as pond dipping and bug hunting and have exclusive access to the wet play area during a morning session. Quiet spaces and additional support facilities will also be available to help ensure a comfortable and enjoyable visit for all attendees.

Families can also enjoy earlier access, with entry available from 09:00 to 18:00 on the day for those who have booked tickets for the SEND Family Day.

The event is structured to provide a calmer experience, with opportunities to access activities in a relaxed setting. Families will be able to dip in and out of sessions throughout the day by showing their wristbands, creating a flexible experience that suits individual preferences.

Two greater flamingos together

Set within the beautiful surroundings of Martin Mere, the day also offers the chance to discover a wide variety of species, from flamingos and cranes to otters. The centre is home to more than 70 species and a wide range of family-friendly attractions, including adventure play areas and additional boat tours and canoes.

Victoria Fellowes, Visitor Experience Manager at WWT Martin Mere, said: “We have had feedback that families would really benefit from quieter sessions that are specifically for SEND families to enjoy. Following on from trialing quieter sessions across some of our popular activities, we’re proud to announce our first SEND Family Day which allows us to tailor our activities, and also trial what works and what doesn’t for those families.”

Tickets are limited to ensure an enjoyable atmosphere, with advance booking required. WWT members, carers, and under 3s go free to this event. For non-members, adult tickets are £16.00 and child tickets are £10.00.
