Meet June, Retail Volunteer at Martin Mere

Volunteer for almost two years, June comes each Wednesday to Martin Mere to help out in our gift shop. She describes volunteering as ‘fun’ and ‘worthwhile’.

Speaking on what got her started, June said: “A friend of mine did a lot of voluntary work with the Samaritans and was always talking about how it was good for him. I saw something on Facebook about Martin Mere’s volunteer week, and although I’d missed it I decided to pop in anyway.

“As I had a background in sales, I said I wanted to do memberships. Membership was part of the gift shop and welcome desk, so that’s what I tried and I’ve been here since.”

As part of June’s role, she is one of the first points of contact for our visitors. She helps to welcome them in, process their tickets or membership, and pass them onto the welcome desk to find out what’s on.

Or if anyone is looking to buy something from our gift shop range - whether it’s a soft toy, some delicious fudge, or a book, June is here to help.

“I love volunteering at Martin Mere and enjoy working with the people there. Nathan and Louise in the shop couldn’t be more kind to me. They’re fun to work with and the day goes so quick.”

In her spare time, June loves to spend it with friends whether it’s at the cinema, coffee shops, or occasionally visiting Martin Mere on her days off. As a people person, her role in retail is the perfect fit as she gets to meet new people every day.

Asked what her most memorable moments were, June said: “I love the social gatherings that Martin Mere arrange for the volunteers. In the summer, we have a volunteer party, and at Christmas, they also organise a Christmas dinner for us all. You feel so appreciated and wanted and it’s lovely feeling a part of this big team.”

June also encourages others to volunteer at Martin Mere.

“I can’t imagine wanting to volunteer anywhere else. The team is so good to me here. I feel like I’m doing something good.”

“If you are considering volunteering, come to volunteering week and find out more. I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy it, but it’s exceeded my expectations and I’ve gotten more from it than I’ve given. And if you can't make it to the Volunteer Week, still get in touch with the team and arrange for a time to come in."
