Stork chicks hatch at Martin Mere

Adorable white stork chicks have successfully hatched at WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre in Burscough.

The new arrivals were hatched late April and mark some of the first chicks to hatch from the centre’s Living Collection, which features birds from around the world such as flamingos, swans, cranes, and geese.

Above you can see the first chick to hatch this year. In the egg next to it, another egg is in the process of hatching.

Two of the chicks have been enjoying an additional feed from our team. Even though the parents feed the chicks themselves, we also feed them to ensure that every chick has the best chance.

This video shows the chicks ‘playing dead’ as our team approached them to provide the chicks with extra food. As the chicks become older, they will become more confident and start to defend the nest more!

Visitors to the Lancashire wetland centre can watch the chicks grow over the next couple of months. The chicks will remain in the nests with their parents for around the first two months of their life, before leaving the nest.
