Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Barn Owl and other birds

A wet start to the day probably resulted in a Barn Owl being out later than usual viewed from the Harrier Hide. No shortage of birds of prey with 10+ Common Buzzard, 4+ Marsh Harrier, 2 Kestrel, 2 Sparrowhawk and Peregrine. Two Raven present yesterday.

The Pink-footed Geese spectacle continues with tens of thousands roosting on the reserve. One Barnacle Goose was seen yesterday with the Pink's.

More wildfowl arriving with full plumage male Pintail on the Mere and many female/eclipsed birds also present. Wigeon and Teal numbers are on the way up. No sign of any of the returning adult Shelduck. Still just 4 Whooper Swan.

A good passage of Skylark yesterday with 150+ going over the Reedbed Walk in just 15 minutes around 8.30am. Numerous Grey Wagtail around the reserve and in the Sewage Works with Pied Wagtails.

A number of Kingfisher around the reserve with birds regularly being seen on the Canoe Safari and as below from the Ron Barker Hide at Miller's Bridge.
