Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Bird News

Relatively quiet on the migration front as we enter the longest day. Most of the 60-70 species present are local breeding birds or part of some post breeding movements.

Barn Owls are feeding young so it's a good time to catch them here. One adult bird was still out and about from the Harrier Hide at 11:40am. Tawny Owl again between the Janet Kear and the UU hides.

Plenty of Black-headed Gull and Shelduck chicks present. A few Avocet have chicks, one pair currently with 4 young. Shoveler with 3 chicks seen from the Ron Barker Hide. However a nesting pair of Little Ringed Plover may have failed, unless they have managed to spirit away the chicks before anyone noticed?

A Cuckoo heard calling near the Janet Kear Hide might be new in as all recent sightings have related to a silent female.

Other birds seen today include Green Sandpiper, 2 Little Gull and Common Tern. Over 40 Swift hunting over the reserve early this morning. Sedge and Reed Warblers are active and Common Whitethroat can be easily seen.

Recent birds include Little Egret and breeding plumage Ruff.
