Plenty of excitement following the black-winged stilt last week, although it only stayed for the day we didn't have to wait long for another rarity. News broke yesterday of a great reed warbler in the small reed bed in front of united utilities hide. Although elusive it showed well on a number of occasions throughout the day and began singing in the evening. Unfortunately no further sign today but it could well still be out there! More excitement followed as a Temminck's stint was found on Woodend marsh at mid day today. Seen from both Tomlinson and Gordon Taylor hide.

92 black-tailed godwits were on Woodend marsh today along with 3 little ringed and one ringed plover. Avocets can be seen sat on nests on both Woodend marsh and the mere, some have chicks with them!

3 pairs of pochards have been seen with ducklings so far and or first shelduck chicks have hatched and were wandering around Woodend marsh today.

8 pairs of common terns are nesting on the mere currently and the adults can often be seen carrying fish over much of the reserve. 2 Mediterranean gulls are still hanging around on the reserve, often seen flying over or on the mere.
