Latest Sightings

After a rainy weekend, we can expect sunny weather throughout the week, making it perfect for birdwatching here at Martin Mere.

On Thursday, 1 Spoonbill and 1 Bittern were seen from the United Utilities hide. This location is ideal for observing these two species as they fly over to feed in different areas of the reserve. As of Saturday, 2 Bitterns have been recorded on site, and one was spotted today from the Rees hide. Additionally, 1 Spoonbill is visible today from the Discovery hide.
A variety of birds were sighted on Thursday, including 1 Treecreeper at Ron Barker hide, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker at Janet Kear hide, 1 Nuthatch and 2 Kingfisher with 2 chicks at Mereview hide. Reed Bunting, Cetti's Warbler, Reed Warbler, Whitethroat, Blackcap, Song Thrush and Swift were also recorded.

Over the weekend, several birds of prey were observed: 1 Peregrine at Rees hide, 1 Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 1 Tawny Owl chick, and 4 Marsh Harrier at Ron Barker hide, as well as 1 Barn Owl on the Reedbed Walk. 1 Hobby was spotted today from United Utilities hide today, where Cattle Egret are also visible.

At Harrier hide, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Pochard, Herring Gulls, and Tufted Ducks were seen.

On the Mere, sightings included Wigeon, Cormorants, Little Ringed Plover, Ringed Plover, Ruff, Mediterranean Gulls, Grey Heron, Gadwall, Shoveler and Common Tern. 2 Oystercatchers with their chicks were also observed.

The Avocets and their chicks remain visible from Gordon Taylor, Tomlinson or Rees hides.

On Saturday, 1 Jay, 1 Willow Warbler, and 2 Little Egret were spotted along the Reedbed Walk.
