Latest Sightings
The Kingfisher had another successful breeding year, as 2 adults and 2 juveniles were spotted fishing together in the pools at Mereview hide and Ron Barker hide earlier this week.
There are two pairs of Great Crested Grebe inhabiting the reedbed lake at Harrier hide, and one adult was observed carrying its young on their back. Little Grebe, Gadwall, Tufted Ducks and Shoveler can also be seen.
It is likely the Bittern eggs have already hatched, and we are seeing two adults flying daily to feed between Woodend Marsh, the Reedbed Walk and Top Mere.
A juvenile Tawny Owl was spotted near Ron Barker hide, and another adult was heard calling by Janet Kear hide.
Juvenile Grey Heron have also been seen around the reserve, and you can often see them flying over, or landing on the Mere.
Also on the Mere, many Black-headed Gulls, Oystercatchers, Shelducks, Moorhen, Mallards, Greylag and Canada Geese are visible with their offspring and can be seen from Discovery Hide or the viewing platforms.
There are still Avocets with chicks to be seen from Rees, Gordon Taylor and Tomlinson hide.
In other sightings, 1 Spoonbill was present on the Mere on Monday, along with 2 Ringed Plover, 2 Marsh Harrier, 2 Common Tern, 2 Mediterranean Gulls and 1 Ruff.
Yesterday, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker was sighted at Janet Kear hide.
On the Mere today, there are around 30 Lapwing present. 5 Whooper Swans and 2 Mute Swans were observed from Ron Barker hide this morning. Cattle Egret can be spotted from United Utilities hide, and there are plenty of Warblers on the Reedbed Walk.
