Latest Sightings

We’ve had some fantastic birds seen on our Reserve recently, with the breeding season in full swing.

The best recent record is of a Tree Sparrow, which was seen near the Duckery over the weekend – this species has become very uncommon on site in recent years. We also have up to three Wood Sandpipers on Woodend Marsh, best viewed from the Tomlinson hide.

Up at the Mere View hide, a Great Egret has been showing reliably well, and from here and the Ron Barker hide, flocks of feeding Swallow can often be seen over the fields. Cattle Egret can be seen from here with our herd of cattle, as well as the occasional Kingfisher.

Common Terns have been seen and heard flying over the Reserve, and can sometimes be seen on the Mere islands amongst the Black-headed and Mediterranean Gulls.

Two Bittern have been heard booming in the Reedbed, where a Cuckoo has also been hard singing. Sedge, Reed and Cetti’s Warblers also continue to be heard here.
