Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Raptor fest

Another six species of raptor today with 4+ Marsh Harrier, 2 Peregrine (imm female and ad female), 8+ Common Buzzard, 2+ Kestrel, 2 Sparrowhawk and Hobby with the later attempting to grab Goldfinches feeding around the Mere.  In recent days both Merlin and Hen Harrier have been seen on the estuary close by.

The hunting Peregrines have been flushing at least 500 Lapwing and 2000 Starling.

Good numbers of Ruff now with 30+, 10+ Snipe, 8 Black-tailed Godwit and a few Dunlin. Late in the day 2 Greenshank dropped in on the Mere and at least one Green Sandpiper was present in front of the Harrier Hide with Common Snipe.

Kingfisher as usual from the Ron Barker Hide. At least 2 Little Egret floating around the reserve.
