Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery.

To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Tuesday 18 November.

We’re very sorry for any disappointment this may cause. If you have any questions, please do ask our team.

Vis Mig

It's a great time of year to witness visible migration ('vis mig').  Hundreds of thousands of birds will be passing through the UK during autumn migration and many of these are apparent just by looking up into the sky.

Generally people choose prominent geographical locations to log the birds passing through, coastal spots and high points, so there has been very little consistent counting of passage birds over the reserve.

If you want a flavor of what is happening in the UK at present check out the excellent Trektellen website below and click on Great Britain.

Trektellen - Visible Migration Counts in the UK

Today we have had a fair passage of Meadow Pipit, 'alba' Wagtails, Skylark, Swallow and other distant passerines. Five Jay moved over the reserve mid morning, an unusual bird here.

The Whooper Swan count has increased to 49. A partial count of water birds produced 1720 Mallard, 15 Common Shelduck, 207 Coot and 140 Moorhen. At least 6000 Pink-footed Geese on the reserve this morning.

Two Peregrine this morning, 2 Marsh Harrier, 3 Common Buzzard, 2 Sparrowhawk and 2 Kestrel.

Three Ruff back on the reserve as the water levels continue to drop. At least 30 Common Snipe and 200+ Lapwing.
