Do you need a mindful moment away from the Christmas chaos? You’re not alone. WWT – the wetland charity – conducted a survey of 2,000 adults* that revealed that more than a quarter of people (28%) are seeking out walks near water this winter, whether that’s a lake, pond or coastal habitat.
With safe, accessible paths and wide-open waterscapes, WWT Slimbridge’s award-winning and mood-boosting wetland centre is the ideal place to stretch your legs this season. Offering everything from tranquil lakes teeming with wildlife to festive events designed for families and nature lovers alike, every immersive visit provides a unique opportunity to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Just as birds and animals find a welcome retreat with us during winter, you too can find solace in our wide-open spaces, soothing water and sheltered hides.

Each winter we welcome over 20,000 migratory birds to the site, including the iconic Bewick’s swans. But wetlands aren’t just for wildlife – they’re also a calming retreat for people looking for fresh air and quiet moments away from the rush of Christmas. Rich with sights and sounds, our site and its range of accessible hides and habitats offers unforgettable sensory experiences for all. From watching flocks of wild birds gathering on frosty lakes and listening to the calls of swans and geese during daily wild bird feeds, to witnessing spectacular sunsets and mesmerising jackdaw murmurations as you leave for the day, every visit offers a new seasonal spectacle.
The survey also found that nearly 60% of us still choose Boxing Day (26 December) as our favourite day to get out for fresh air – making a winter walk at WWT Slimbridge the perfect post-Christmas reset. The survey also revealed that 61% of people intend to improve their health and wellbeing as they go into the New Year. WWT Slimbridge offers the perfect sanctuary to unwind and recharge, with research showing that just 10 minutes spent in their blue spaces can boost your mood. As the festive season builds and life gets busier, wetlands provide a welcome opportunity to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature.
