Lancashire’s WWT Martin Mere Named One of the UK’s Top Visitor Attractions in National Survey

Lancashire’s WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre, based in Burscough near Southport, has ranked among the top visitor attractions in the latest Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) survey.

The ALVA survey, carried out in Spring 2025, evaluated over 60 of the UK's attractions, scoring in key areas such as likelihood to recommend, overall enjoyment, overall atmosphere and more.

WWT Martin Mere emerged as a top attraction, ranking number one in nine out of 22 categories:

  • Likelihood to recommend
  • Overall enjoyment
  • Means of physically getting around the site
  • Making you feel like the site is a place where you belong
  • Overall atmosphere
  • Being family friendly
  • Offering something very different
  • Bringing the subject matter to life
  • Caters to a broad range of diverse audiences

Home to a variety of wetland wildlife, such as flamingos and otters, and offering hands-on experiences throughout the year, WWT Martin Mere combines fun, education, and conservation in a welcoming and accessible setting. The site features buggy and wheelchair-friendly paths, seasonal events, and opportunities to get up close to rare birds and other species.

Nick Brooks, Centre Manager at WWT Martin Mere said: “We are incredibly proud to be recognised by ALVA in so many important areas. Whether it’s a family day out, a school visit, or a peaceful nature retreat, our goal is to create a space where everyone feels they belong.”

ALVA’s membership includes many of the UK’s most iconic attractions, from museums and heritage sites to zoos and gardens, making Martin Mere’s performance in the survey an even more significant achievement.
