Two white stork chicks hatch at Martin Mere!
Chick season has officially begun at WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre in Burscough, with the arrival of two adorable white stork chicks.
The white storks, part of Martin Mere’s diverse bird collection featuring species from around the world, began nesting in late March. Then, on Thursday 24 April, WWT Martin Mere welcomed the first two fluffy chicks.
Nick Brooks, Centre Manager, said: “We are thrilled to welcome another generation of white stork chicks to our wetland centre. The chicks are doing really well and being carefully cared for by both their parents and our Living Collections team.”
The chicks are born with white/grey down feathers and don’t have black markings like the adults. You will also notice that their bills are a dark grey colour which will start to turn red over the first year.
In the wild white storks will eat fish, amphibians, insects, and even small mammals and birds. Parents will feed their young earthworms and insects, which they regurgitate into the nest for the chicks to eat, but will give them water directly.
How to See the White Stork Chicks
Visitors keen to catch a glimpse of the new arrivals can find the white stork habitat by following the path through the eco-garden. The chicks will remain in the nest for approximately two months, so there's plenty of time to witness this special stage of their development.
