Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Don't you just love autumn!

A fantastic day, with Pink-footed Geese in and out all day long, there must have been many newly arrived birds today as we had new Whooper Swans arrive on the northerly winds, a count this afternoon of 168 at least. There must be c20,000 Pink Feet in the area at the moment, all morning birds were arriving from the north high up.

Other newly arrived birds included the first 5 Fieldfare of the autumn which flew North over the Mere, tying in nicely with the first Fieldfare at Spurn on the east coast today. At least 10 Barnacle Geese in with the Pink Feet and 2 Ravens were seen.

A juv female Peregrine upto 3 Common Buzzard, Kestrel and at least 1 Marsh Harrier were noted. A group of 4 Black-tailed Godwit and c30 Ruff were about mainly on the Mere along with small numbers of Snipe.
