No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides

Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery.

To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Tuesday 18 November.

We’re very sorry for any disappointment this may cause. If you have any questions, please do ask our team.

Close alert

Yellow-browed Warbler?

Yellow-browed Warbler? No. However a more traditional Martin Mere rarity was found today in the shape of a drake Green-winged Teal on Vinson's Marsh from the Ron Barker Hide. Also from there Little Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, 2 Dunlin and 30+ Ruff.

Don't rule out one of those eastern gems following a tit flock through the collection area, as one or two have been turning up in Lancashire in the past couple of days on the back of the strong easterlies that have been blowing for over a week.

Less Pink-footed Geese today, though still impressive numbers. A group of 6 adult Shelduck arrived on the Mere around midday the first of many that will winter and also breed here.

Three Peregrine, 3 Marsh Harrier, 4+ Common Buzzard and Sparrowhawk.

Two Grey Wagtail on the Mere this morning. Little Egret from the Harrier Hide.
