Swan Catch

Yesterday was our annual swan catch here at Caerlaverock. During this we try and catch as many Whooper Swans as possible and then fit them with large plastic leg rings called darvic rings. These leg rings have a set of number or letters and are individual to this bird. By putting these rings on we can then track the migration of the whooper swans and also the breeding success on a yearly basis. This year we again have another great catch with 162 Whooper Swans being caught in our specially designed swan pipe. Of these swans at least 70 were new birds, so this means we can now follow another 70 birds over the rest of their life time.
