Bird News

A bright, warm day today, with a good variety of species again seen around the reserve - a 'day list' of 70+ species can be acheived without too much difficulty at the moment.

Today's highlights included a Cuckoo and Barn Owl from the Janet Kear hide and 11 male Ruff showing varying degrees of breeding plumage.Resized_20160506_090928   Resized_20160506_091452

Other species of note included Marsh harrier from the Harrier hide, Whimbrel on the Mere, and 2 Little Ringed Plovers which were quite mobile and were seen from both United Utilities and Ron Barker hides as well as on the Mere. Little Egret was again in front of the Kingfisher hide.

Corn Buntings were singing from the Marsh Moss Lane entrance to the Reedbed Walk, and near the "Wheatear Field", where Yellowhammer and Grasshopper Warbler could also be heard (see map in yesterday's post).

Keep and eye out for Black Terns over the weekend - they are recorded in most years, and with numbers of birds moving across the country at the moment, the chances of one or more being seen on the reserve are good.
