Sandpiper Trio

Regular viewers on here will be aware that the best time to come birding at Martin Mere is when rain fronts are moving through because there is always a chance that something new will be forced to drop in in the inclement weather!

Today a classic trio of sandpiper were seen on Woodend Marsh from the United Utilities Hide with Wood, Green and Common Sandpiper all putting in appearances.

Other waders present included 100+ Black-tailed Godwit, 100+ Lapwing, 20+ Avocet, 10+ Oystercatcher, 4 Redshank and Ringed Plover.

Most of the Black-headed Gull chicks have fledged now. A Med Gull was seen yesterday and a couple of adult Lesser Black-backed Gull are usually present.

The brown backs and heads of young Black-headed Gulls do cause confusion with visitors at this time of year.

Two Common Tern on Woodend Marsh today. Barn Owl hunting late morning. At least 4 Grey Heron and two Little Egret present.

Raptors include Buzzards, Kestrels, Sparrowhawks and regular Peregrine.

Plenty of wildfowl scattered about the reserve going into eclipse plumage including Teal, Wigeon, Shoveler and Gadwall. Pochard still have chicks and there are plenty of recently hatched Shelduck and Mallard around.

A full house of common hirudines with Swallow, House Martin and Sand Martin feeding low over the reserve this morning with Swifts.

Tree Sparrows along the Nature Trail.

Cuckoo still present on the Reedbed Walk yesterday. Sedge and Reed Warbler, Whitethroat and Chiffchaff along the walk too.

Just off the reserve Yellow Wagtail and Corn Bunting.
