Recent Sightings 11th-17th September

Highlights from this week: Osprey, Little Stint, Ruff and Curlew Sandpipers.

British Steel Hide - Observatory Hide

There were a nice variety of highlights from the marsh scrapes and freshwater lagoon during the past seven days. An Osprey and a Little Stint on the 12th as well as three Curlew Sandpipers and three Spotted Redshank (both species have remained until the 17th). Seven juvenile Ruff were on the freshwater lagoon on the 17th which the highest count for the reserve for at least 8 years. Other birds have included a Whinchat, a Yellow Wagtail, a Water Rail and a Kingfisher.

Millennium Wetlands

One of the highlights of this week was a sighting of three Kingfishers having a bit of a fracas on one of the old fishing platforms around the northern loop of the reserve. Although this begs the question, what is a group of Kingfishers called? I personally like a 'concentration' of Kingfishers. Now that the stony islands in front of the Peter Scott Hide have been cut, be on the look out for roosting Snipe, these cryptic waders can be surprisingly well camoflauged in amongst the rocks.
