Millennium Wetlands

We had lots of highlights out on the Reserve this weekend for the annual Dawn Chorus event. This included the site's first view of a Swift this year.

A Grasshopper Warbler has been spotted on sight along with many other counts including 5 Whitethroat, 3 Lesser Whitethroat, 10 Chiffchaff, 3 Willow Warbler, 11 Sedge Warbler, 9 Cetti's Warbler and 3 Reed Warbler. A Water Rail has also been heard from the Bittern Reedbed. Wildfowl counts include 3 Teal, 4 Little Grebe, 8 Pochard, 7 Gadwall, 4 Shelduck, 2 Greylag Geese, 5 Canada Geese and 15 Tufted Duck. There has also been 2 Little Egret and Grey Heron, 1 Cormorant, 10 Lapwing, 2 Knot and fluctuating numbers of Black-Tailed Godwit. Throughout the site 6 Goldfinch were seen, as well as 5 Song Thrush, 15 Blackcap, 7 Bullfinch, 2 Stonechat, 1 Jay and a vocal Green Woodpecker. Two Peregrine Falcon and 3 Buzzard, as well as 6 Mediterranean Gulls have also been seen.

 

British Steel Hide

Good numbers of Black-tailed Godwits have been using the scrapes, along with 11 Shelduck, 6 Tufted Duck, 4 Gadwall and 2 Lapwing. Two Spoonbills were seen on the lagoons this weekend and the Little Gull has been in various areas on site including the freshwater lagoon. Two Common Sandpipers were also seen from this hide.

The WWT Llanelli Shetland Sheep are back! come take a look down at Deep Water Lake for these natural habitat managers doing a great job keeping the vegetation down.
