Wonderful wildfowl

Wildfowl are now flocking to the reserve, with numbers increasing daily.

Up to 7 Whooper Swans have been seen on the Whooper Pond, although they do feed elsewhere too so it's the luck of the draw if they are here during your visit.

The Barnacle Geese, up to 4000 of them, are mostly feeding on the pioneer saltmarsh so a keen eye is needed to spot them from the Saltcot Merse Observatory. This is normal behaviour when they first arrive, and as numbers build over the next few weeks we should see them piling into the fields to give closer views.

Duck numbers also continue to rise; Teal, Wigeon, Tufted Duck and Shoveler filling the Folly Pond. Many are still in their eclipse plumage, but beginning to moult through into their breeding plumage.

We are regularly seeing Marsh Harrier, Hen Harrier, Peregrine and Merlin on the reserve, usually over the saltmarsh so keep your eyes peeled!

High Tide: 14:15, 8.9m
